Dr. Jeong-Won Jeong is a MRI physicist, medical imaging scientist, and assistant professor in the departments of pediatrics and neurology at the School of Medicine, Wayne State University. Before joining toWayne State University, he had completed his doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering at University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA. His dissertation was titled by "Localization of Brain Alpha Activity using Independent Component Analysis in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Electroencephalograph" (Mentor: Professor Manbir Singh). He completed post-doctoral fellow training in the departments of radiology(www.3tmri.usc.edu), biomedical engineering (www.bme.usc.edu), and Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering (www.ami.usc.edu) at USC. His research topics were to investigate diffusion tensor MRI technique for detection of axonal damage in traumatic brain injuriesand develop new 3-D ultrasound computer tomography system for early detection of breast cancer. Over his academic career, he has built up strong expertise in applying functional MRI, diffusion MRI, EEG, ultrasound, and PET to neurological disorders. An emphasis of his recent work has been the development of imaging biomarkers for the children with autism spectrum disorders, global developmental delay, and borderline personality disorder using diffusion tensor MRIand functional MRI. Also he has an interest in developing new algorithmic techniques and systems to facilitate the analysis of pediatric functional imaging studies.

  • Development of High-resolution Ultrasound Transmission Tomography system for human breast imaging.
    1. Actively coordinated hardware/software developments to commercialize innovative high-resolution ultrasound system.
    2. Developed a new image fusion method for multi-band images using local principal component analysis
    3. Developed a novel image restoration method using Volterra-type nonlinear kernels and principal dynamic modes.
    4. Developed a complete set of post-processing techniques to differentiate soft tissues in vector valued image. Target detection method using constrained energy minimization and level set active contour method combined with hierarchical agglomerative clustering were developed to identify previously undetectable sub-millimeter particles and improve the accuracy of soft tissue segmentation.
    5. Investigated the feasibility of usingultrasound technology to differentiate several breast cancers (invasive carcinoma, tumor necrosis, and benign changes) via intensive clinical study with human breast specimens.
